Whether we’re fighting for a parking spot in the holiday shopping rush, hoping the snow will stop so that shoveling won’t take as long, or struggling to keep our New Year’s resolutions, the devil likes to try to sneak in and attack us at any opportunity we give him. If our prayer life is faltering, that fellow mall shopper who took our spot can become our worst enemy, the kind act of shoveling our neighbor’s walk can turn into complaining that the neighbor never does it herself, or snacking on that one brownie can turn into inhaling an entire plate of them! A perfectly good day can go downhill in a hurry when we don’t recognize the battle for what it is and start out each day with prayer.
In Ephesians 6:11-12, the apostle Paul encourages us to “put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand up against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (KJV)
We have all faced temptations, tests, and trials that we either gave into or fought by faith. The way to be prepared to fight off the traps, snares, schemes, and torments of the devil is to put on the very protection and weapons that Paul lists in Ephesians 6:13-18. Paul admonishes us twice to be sure to put on the whole armor of God. The fact that he mentions it twice shows the importance of following exactly what we are told.
We must be dressed for spiritual battle, day in and day out.
