Making Decisions as a Couple – Part 2

Last week we looked at the first step in making a decision as a couple, which was to know the Word of God. This week we will look at the next two important steps, developing the mind of Christ and submitting your will to Christ’s will.

Discipline Two: Developing the Mind of Christ

Developing the mind of Christ is the next crucial discipline when making decisions together as a couple. In life, you will frequently run into choices that truly require the wisdom of God. Your mind may see that one decision seems to be the most logical one for your family, and even though you and your spouse may both agree on the choice, it does not necessarily make it the right one. Only God knows the full spectrum of your lives, future, and purpose, and He can direct you along a path that may, at times, even seem illogical.

“For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that He may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ” (I Corinthians 2:16 KJV).

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him” (James 1:5 KJV).

Discipline Three: Submitting Your Will to Christ’s Will

God created each person with a free will. There are so many different paths to choose, but only one is God’s way. You must decide which way you will go. Ask yourself, “Am I truly putting all emotions aside and submitting to God in this situation?” Are you choosing His way, in spite of what your flesh wants? You can do nothing of lasting consequence and purpose if you are doing it in your own “self.”

Jesus said, “I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me” (John 5:30 NKJV).
