Marriage is hard work! Even though you love the man God has given you, keeping and protecting a healthy relationship can be a difficult task. But we as wives are still called to bring honor to our husbands. After all, “A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones” (Proverbs 12:4 NIV).
Sometimes it is helpful to observe other women in your life who serve as examples of godly wives. In the Book of Titus, we are exhorted to listen to the women who “have the fruit on the tree,” so to speak, and to learn from them. Whether it be your mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, or perhaps another woman who has filled a motherly role for you, I encourage you to consider the women in your life and ask the Lord to show you how He is using them to impact your tomorrows and help you become a better you.
“The aged women likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; that they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the Word of God be not blasphemed” (Titus 2:3-5 KJV).
When Jesus taught on marriage, He did not settle for anything less than the original purpose that God proposed for marriage in the first two chapters of Genesis. When the Pharisees came to Jesus taunting him with regards to the teaching on marriage, this was His response:
“And He answered and said unto them, ‘Have ye not read, that He which made them at the beginning made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.’ They say unto Him, ‘Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?’ He saith unto them, ‘Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so’” (Matthew 19:4-8 KJV).
My mother, despite being a single mom, pressed on tenaciously in the face of adversity and through the difficulties and trials of single parenthood. She is a brave woman who carried the load of a bread winner, disciplinarian, leader who brought us through turbulent times, and the overseer of everything that went on in my life as a child. Had I not learned tenacity from my mother, I may have given up when we hit a brick wall during our third year of marriage. I pressed on when I didn’t think it was going to work and broke through to victory – a happy and stable marriage.
We are never finished with the discipline of learning. We can glean much from the godly women in our lives by talking and listening to them. We can then become the blessing of a wife God always intended for us to be.
Great truth Angelique!
It is so true that we are often learning by example and a Godly model is so helpful. One of my strongest memories is that my Mom & Dad took time apart from others to talk very regularly.
I also observed and watched my Mom sacrifice, have a servant like heart, work rigorously to complete things, value spiritual things, honor her husband, and invest in doing the best your capable to do…all character building. Godly character is an asset in marriage.
